Format Change Falters The new 2019 edition has a few significant changes of note. Content remains very good but is reorganized in its placement. This is generally fine and will just take some time to get use to. However, the disappointing change in the paper quality, faint text (fuzzy to this eye) and the poor photo quality are driving the 3 star review. When compared with prior versions, the 2019 edition disappoints in these areas.Quality and content have suffered in 2019! There are lots of guidebooks out there, so I checked the ratings for an upcoming trip to Italy. The DK Eyewitness guides are among the most highly rated, so I checked one out from the local library to see if it's worth buying; for comparison, I also got copies of the guidebooks by Rick Steves, Lonely Planet, Frommers, Michelin, and at least another couple. The library didn't have a copy of the 2019 DK Eyewitness edition on the shelf, so I went for the 2017 (2018 was also checked out). The quality of the print and figures and binding, the detail, the thoroughness were all excellent in that 2017 volume -- really top-notch and deserving of the high ratings. Figuring the 2019 would be the same but with slight updates as necessary, I bought a copy. The 2019 edition shows what must be cost-cutting measures by the publisher. Whereas the previous years' editions have very sturdy bindings, the pages in my brand new 2019 copy separated from the binding on the very first day. (Some might suggest it's designed to do that -- but if that were true, why the glue to hold the binding to the pages?) The cover on the older versions is a thicker material (still softcover) while the cover on the 2019 copy is cheap, like that on a regular paperback book. (My photos show them side by side.) The differences were so obvious I compared various entries in the 2017 volume (the 2018 is extremely similar in content and construction) with the same content in my 2019 volume. (I can see why the front cover of the 2019 version no longer brags on the number of photos, maps, and illustrations, like the 2017 cover does!) I've attached some photos, focusing on showing the content on a topic in the 2017 copy (on the left) and the same topic in the 2019 copy (on the right) -- but in some cases, the 2017 edition presented something (like maps, one photo of which is upside down... sorry) that is completely lacking in the 2019 edition, so a true side-by-side comparison would not be possible. Here are some details on how they compare:- Total page count is 672 in 2017, 560 in 2019 (yet they are of equal thickness)- Paper is glossy and photos/colors are bright and crisp in 2017, paper is cheaper and colors are comparatively dull in 2019- Rome coverage is 98 pp in 2017, 86 pp in 2019- Florence coverage is 44 pp in 2017, 34 pp in 2019; some specific differences include: Florence coverage in 2017 includes maps covering 6 full pages (see my photos) as well as smaller map insets, 2019 includes 2 full pages of maps plus insets Florence coverage in 2017 includes full page "Directory" to accompany maps (shopping, food, markets...), 2019 has a few small sidebars with content on "Drink" or "Eat" or "Shop" (see my photos) Uffizi in Florence is 4 pp (plus additional mentions) in 2017, 2 pp in 2019- Lucca coverage is 4 pp in 2017, 2 pp in 2019 So -- my advice would be to get Rick Steves (a guidebook that fully deserves its top rating). If you really like the DK Eyewitness line, I would buy the 2017 or 2018 edition rather than the 2019 edition. The new edition is still good, but it's a 3-star product while the 2017 edition would get a 5 from me. I hope this helps some who, like me, were overwhelmed by all the choices!Great for our cruise I usually buy Fodors, and I did for our cruise, but I liked using the two books together. I would read Fodors, then go to DK for the pictures and maps. Fodors gives you the specifics on how to get to the the site you want to see, then the DK book gives you color pictures and maps so you can find the train station and/or know what to look for. I'll take the DK book with me on my trip, but I think I needed both to do the planning. Neither was sufficient on its own. Later in my research I bought the Rick Steves' Cruise book and it was far superior.

Pretty good, though not what I expected Overall, I did enjoy this book. The historical research is very impressive, especially the day to day accounts of the events. Also, I really enjoyed how the authors did mention some possibilities of conspiracy because we all know that the theories are out there and it's nice to see where they could possibly originate from. However, I did not see what the point was in spending basically the whole first third of the book detailing battles at the end of the war. I see that they were trying to set it up for showing us how a nation was torn apart and Lincoln was under such stress and so on, but it went on a little too long for my tastes. On the other hand, I also felt that from Lincoln's shooting to the end of the book was a little rushed, maybe due to the first half at least, being pretty slow in my opinion. Overall, I would recommend it to someone interested in history, though probably not to a generic reader. I think a lot of this books claim to fame is it's author and publicity. I enjoyed this book on the whole, but was honestly just expecting a little more page-turning excitement.KILLING LINCOLN- BILL O'REILLY Well Bill does it again! Although I'm reading his books out of order, I still have to say that the writing style is great and I love the way he gives the facts. No games, just the facts mam... I always liked him as a news commentator, who knew he possessed this wonderful trait. I've read 4 of his books so far and I have to say that I was really surprised, because I liked KILLING PATTON, then REAGAN the best. I felt I really walked away with some invaluable information. On to KILLING THE RISING SUN! 🏯😉Good, but not great I've read a couple other of the Bill O'Reilly 'Killing so and so' books. I find them all pretty interesting, and enlightening on topics that I otherwise wouldn't know much about .However, you must keep a grain of salt in mind while reading any of these books. They tend to jump to conclusions, some far-fectched, and you tend to feel a little rushed through the details. This, and all the other "Killing" books are great starter books into the topics, but anyone who is serious about understanding the history of Lincoln and his assassination will know to read elsewhere into more substantiated books.

A look at the typographic futura Most movie-goers probably don't realise how realistic the future looks in sci-fi productions. Set designers and art directors create a very plausible feel and look for the years to come with buildings, props, fashion, lighting and of course type, whether it's those huge numbers on the outside of the USS Enterprise in 'Star Trek' or the text on a tablet's screen in 'Moon' Dave Addey explores this rather niche corner of sci-fi in his surprisingly interesting book.The all-time fave futures type is Eurostyle Bold Extended designed in 1962 by Aldo Novarese for the Italian Nebiolo type foundry and even though it's over fifty years old it still looks the part and can still be used to project a future feel. This was the typeface that Addey kept coming across in movies and inspired him to find out more and eventually write this book. Seven films are looked at in detail: 2001; Alien; Star Trek: The motion picture; Blade Runner; Total Recall; Wall-E; Moon. The typefaces in all of these are explored with plenty of stills and text revealing how they are used right down to the smallest bit of copy, for example, page thirty-six has a still from 2001 showing Doctor Floyd reading the long instructions on how to use a zero-gravity toilet and it's printed out on the opposite page so you can read them. The long running Star Trek used several faces that were issued as a font pack in 1992 (still available online, too). Total Recall, on page 170, has a logo for Mars Today based on the USA Today newspaper.As well as the movies there are heavily illustrated Q and A interviews with two typographers Stephen Coles and Antonio Cavedoni, director Paul Verhoeven, animators Ralph Eggleston and Craig Foster and designer Mike Okuda. The last few pages have fascinating visual summary of how hard it is to create a credible future look that's also good entertainment.Dave Addey writes in a pleasant, breezy style that makes the title a fun read and the rather flamboyant layout of the pages adds to the book's appeal. It will interest graphic designers and especially sci-fi movie fans.A must-read for geeks! Fascinating and detailed analysis of (not only font) design in science fiction movies. Beautifully produced, wonderfully written. I discovered The authorthrough his wonderful blog, and after reading his amazing articles on '2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'Wall•E' I was delighted to discover that he had a book. Do yourself a favor and check out his blog and bathe in the design geekery. Surely you will discover that you need to own this book!

Beautiful calendar that covers all of the games. I bought the 2017 one to use for 2017 (shocking) and I loved it so much I ordered the 2018 version. The calendar is well made and has enough room per day to write all my classes and events without squishing them. I also enjoy the layout and mini pictures that compliment the large ones.I love this calendar as much as I love the series My roommate hates me for buying this. My son is 8 and loves everything Zelda, since he needs a calendar anyways, I decided to get this one, and gave it as a stocking stuffer. He's got hoverboard, pokemon and other wonderful games for Christmas, and yet, I see him turning the pages in this calendar every so often!!
