too abstract The book itself is very pretty but some of the questions are less thought-provoking and more confusing than I was hoping for. I wanted it to help me power down before bed but I find myself wracking my brain to think of answers.Awesome AwesomeGreat book! This is a great little book. I use it in my office with my clients and there are several good mindfulness activities that help build the foundation to implementing mindfulness and meditation skills into your daily life.

A Spy Among Friends Pdf

ISBN: 0804136653
Title: A Spy Among Friends Pdf Kim Philby and the Great Betrayal
Master storyteller Ben Macintyre’s most ambitious work to date brings to life the twentieth century’s greatest spy story.

Kim Philby was the greatest spy in history, a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War—while he was secretly working for the enemy. And nobody thought he knew Philby like Nicholas Elliott, Philby’s best friend and fellow officer in MI6. The two men had gone to the same schools, belonged to the same exclusive clubs, grown close through the crucible of wartime intelligence work and long nights of drink and revelry. It was madness for one to think the other might be a communist spy, bent on subverting Western values and the power of the free world.

But Philby was secretly betraying his friend. Every word Elliott breathed to Philby was transmitted back to Moscow—and not just Elliott’s words, for in America, Philby had made another powerful friend: James Jesus Angleton, the crafty, paranoid head of CIA counterintelligence. Angleton's and Elliott’s unwitting disclosures helped Philby sink almost every important Anglo-American spy operation for twenty years, leading countless operatives to their doom. Even as the web of suspicion closed around him, and Philby was driven to greater lies to protect his cover, his two friends never abandoned him—until it was too late. The stunning truth of his betrayal would have devastating consequences on the two men who thought they knew him best, and on the intelligence services he left crippled in his wake.

Told with heart-pounding suspense and keen psychological insight, and based on personal papers and never-before-seen British intelligence files, A Spy Among Friends is Ben Macintyre’s best book yet, a high-water mark in Cold War history telling.

Kim Philby and the Old Boys' Club This excellent book by the London journalist, Ben Macintyre, is suspenseful and indeed reads almost like a novel. One has to keep reminding oneself that Kim Philby’s spying for the Soviet Union resulted in hundreds of deaths. Surprisingly, despite the opening of Soviet–era archives in recent years, the book contains no startling new revelations. It does, however, contain much new interesting information about such incidents as “Operation Valuable” (an attempted infiltration of Communist Albania) and Commander Crabb’s attempt to photograph the underside of a warship that brought Comrades Krushschev and Bulganin on a “goodwill” visit to the United Kingdom. Both projects ended in failure due to Kim Philby‘s passing on of information about them to his Soviet handlers.I don’t think I have ever read such a damning indictment of the English upper class as emerges from this book. Even Gilbert and Sullivan could not have invented more eccentric characters. Their names alone are risible. We have, for example, Hester Harriet Marsden-Smedley, a journalist who first casually suggested to Philby that he might want to become involved with the Secret Services. Then there is Sarah Algeria Marjorie Maxse, a Conservative Party panjandrum and a member of MI6, who recruited Philby on the basis of a report from Valentine Vivian (also known as Vee-Vee), the deputy head of MI6, who knew Philby’s father. Vee-Vee gave the quintessential definition of England’s old boys’ network: “I was asked about him, and said I knew his people.”We also encounter the grossly eccentric Hillary St. John Bridger Philby, Kim Philby’s father, who converted to Islam and became an advisor to King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia. One can add Helenus Patrick Joseph Milmo a barrister who interrogated Philby and who looks from his photograph like a character out of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury.” Then there is Sir Hughe Montgomery Knatchbull-Hugesson, His Majesty’s Ambassador to Ankara, who developed the habit of bringing home official papers to the ambassadorial residence where his valet, an Albanian petty criminal by the name of Bazna, was able to copy the documents and pass them on to the Nazis. This book differs from other books about Philby in that it tells the tale through Philby’s relationship with Nicholas Elliott, a Cambridge-educated British spy, who was Philby’s closest friend and strongest defender even after Philby came under suspicion following the flight to Moscow of Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess after Maclean's exposure as a Soviet agent. Mr. Macintyre tries to make a kind of heroic figure out of Elliott. Elliott became Philby’s friend and began to worship him “with a powerful male adoration that was unrequited, unsexual and unstated.” However, it is clear that Elliott was a total dupe and just another eccentric member of the British old boys’ club who overindulged in alcohol and whose main pleasure was the telling of risqué jokes. I do not share Mr. Macintyre’s admiration of Elliott. He did not hesitate during bibulous lunches to relate confidential information to Philby who promptly passed it on to his Soviet handlers.Mr. Macintyre drops only hints here and there as to why he thinks Philby did what he did. He indicates that Philby was not really an idealist who was committed to the Communist cause. For Philby spying was a kind of game and became in the long run a form of addiction. Mr. Macintyre suggests, correctly I think, that Philby’s famous escape to the Soviet Union from Beirut was no accident. He could easily have been prevented from escaping. However, the old boys were not all that anxious for one of their own to be tried publicly at the Old Bailey where their ineptitude would be displayed before the British public. They preferred the matter to remain concealed by the provisions of the Official Secrets Act. They therefore almost pushed Philby into making his escape. It is somewhat galling that Philby went unpunished for his treachery. However, in some respects, his exile to the Soviet Union may have been the best punishment of all. Here was this bon vivant who loved champagne, haute cuisine and every other kind of luxury forced to live in the dull, gray and cheerless atmosphere of Moscow. Sadly for him, there were no posh watering spots such as he was accustomed to frequenting in London. Additionally, Philby was an unwelcome guest and was assigned a minder who was there nominally to protect him, but whose actual job was to monitor his every movement. Guy Burgess suffered a similar fate as amusingly depicted in the short BBC Television film “An Englishman Abroad” by Allan Bennett and starring Coral Browne and Alan Bates.Ben Macintyre relates a story in which there were no good players. Only J. Edgar Hoover, who has a cameo role in the book, emerges as a person with any common sense and that says it all!Suppose he was laughing at fools like us all the time? Ben Macintyre has consulted virtually every available source on Kim Philby and selected the best bits for this delightful read. No matter if "A Spy Among Friends" contains few startling insights – there is always room on the bookshelf for well-written, scrupulously annotated research.Macintyre does highlight one thing perhaps not widely appreciated, though it was previously pointed out by Graham Greene: Philby was among other things an effective manager, a leader who inspired loyalty in his team because he repeatedly demonstrated loyalty to them. While it's true that he came from the right social background, that alone does not explain why for decades he was protected by the solidarity of "a chosen brotherhood." (pg. 185) What's more telling is that he seems to have been genuinely liked by everyone at MI6, even though they separately loathed each other.Philby may at times have suffered from having chosen to lead a double life, but I suspect he also took some pleasure in disguising himself without resorting to make-up or masks, simply relying on having the right background, a winning personality and conversational skills. A risk-taker without remotely being a Bond-like adventurer, he enjoyed deciding who would get to know how much of the truth, and which version of it. He must also have relished the opportunity to play God, determining who lived or died without his victims ever suspecting that he was the ultimate arbiter. "Victims?" one imagines Philby saying with Harry Lime – "don't be melodramatic."Macintyre's new angle comes from his refocusing our attention on Philby's relationship with his closest friend – and fellow intelligence officer – Nicholas Elliott. Elliott was perhaps the most likeable member of the well-connected set who enabled Philby to remain undetected, if not entirely unsuspected. Whatever it was that finally convinced Elliott of Philby's treachery (the theory offered here is not entirely believable), it came as a severe shock to his system. Macintyre describes well how shaken he must have felt at suddenly confronting a truth he had so long and so confidently denied. The title of this book is "A Spy Among Friends," but a more accurate one might have been, "Intelligence Agents Have No Friends."For a more detailed version of this review, see my blog: hamiltonbeck.wordpress.com

Format Change Falters The new 2019 edition has a few significant changes of note. Content remains very good but is reorganized in its placement. This is generally fine and will just take some time to get use to. However, the disappointing change in the paper quality, faint text (fuzzy to this eye) and the poor photo quality are driving the 3 star review. When compared with prior versions, the 2019 edition disappoints in these areas.Quality and content have suffered in 2019! There are lots of guidebooks out there, so I checked the ratings for an upcoming trip to Italy. The DK Eyewitness guides are among the most highly rated, so I checked one out from the local library to see if it's worth buying; for comparison, I also got copies of the guidebooks by Rick Steves, Lonely Planet, Frommers, Michelin, and at least another couple. The library didn't have a copy of the 2019 DK Eyewitness edition on the shelf, so I went for the 2017 (2018 was also checked out). The quality of the print and figures and binding, the detail, the thoroughness were all excellent in that 2017 volume -- really top-notch and deserving of the high ratings. Figuring the 2019 would be the same but with slight updates as necessary, I bought a copy. The 2019 edition shows what must be cost-cutting measures by the publisher. Whereas the previous years' editions have very sturdy bindings, the pages in my brand new 2019 copy separated from the binding on the very first day. (Some might suggest it's designed to do that -- but if that were true, why the glue to hold the binding to the pages?) The cover on the older versions is a thicker material (still softcover) while the cover on the 2019 copy is cheap, like that on a regular paperback book. (My photos show them side by side.) The differences were so obvious I compared various entries in the 2017 volume (the 2018 is extremely similar in content and construction) with the same content in my 2019 volume. (I can see why the front cover of the 2019 version no longer brags on the number of photos, maps, and illustrations, like the 2017 cover does!) I've attached some photos, focusing on showing the content on a topic in the 2017 copy (on the left) and the same topic in the 2019 copy (on the right) -- but in some cases, the 2017 edition presented something (like maps, one photo of which is upside down... sorry) that is completely lacking in the 2019 edition, so a true side-by-side comparison would not be possible. Here are some details on how they compare:- Total page count is 672 in 2017, 560 in 2019 (yet they are of equal thickness)- Paper is glossy and photos/colors are bright and crisp in 2017, paper is cheaper and colors are comparatively dull in 2019- Rome coverage is 98 pp in 2017, 86 pp in 2019- Florence coverage is 44 pp in 2017, 34 pp in 2019; some specific differences include: Florence coverage in 2017 includes maps covering 6 full pages (see my photos) as well as smaller map insets, 2019 includes 2 full pages of maps plus insets Florence coverage in 2017 includes full page "Directory" to accompany maps (shopping, food, markets...), 2019 has a few small sidebars with content on "Drink" or "Eat" or "Shop" (see my photos) Uffizi in Florence is 4 pp (plus additional mentions) in 2017, 2 pp in 2019- Lucca coverage is 4 pp in 2017, 2 pp in 2019 So -- my advice would be to get Rick Steves (a guidebook that fully deserves its top rating). If you really like the DK Eyewitness line, I would buy the 2017 or 2018 edition rather than the 2019 edition. The new edition is still good, but it's a 3-star product while the 2017 edition would get a 5 from me. I hope this helps some who, like me, were overwhelmed by all the choices!Great for our cruise I usually buy Fodors, and I did for our cruise, but I liked using the two books together. I would read Fodors, then go to DK for the pictures and maps. Fodors gives you the specifics on how to get to the the site you want to see, then the DK book gives you color pictures and maps so you can find the train station and/or know what to look for. I'll take the DK book with me on my trip, but I think I needed both to do the planning. Neither was sufficient on its own. Later in my research I bought the Rick Steves' Cruise book and it was far superior.
